Web Sites and Domains

In a discussion with some friends while back the subject of Micro Breweries came up. When looking around I found a number of sites related to these beers but very little in the way of a directory so I have put together MicroBrewIndex.com.

There are currently around 1,000 listings which are categorized by region. Over time we are hoping to increase this number significantly. Basic listings are free with a premium option at a very small cost.

Long ago I had a very bad experience with WP and had been reluctant to consider using it.  I tried Joomla but found the learning curve to be a problem and moved to Drupal which I found very easy to learn.  Drupal doesn’t have all the bells and whistles but is a good fit for many projects. I really like the Drupal user blogs concept.

From a themes standpoint Joomla has a great selection but could soon get very expensive.  Themes for Drupal are most likely blah but not all that hard to tweak.

I had recently put together www.QUHL.com using WP (modified girl theme) so I decided to try WP for eZOI.  After doing the install I looked around for a theme and decided to give interlude a try but It needed my own look.  Took like 3-4 hours to get what you see now.  Not bad considering getting everything in the header to look like I wanted and I still want to move the logo a bit.

A few days ago I decided to give www.AsiaTraveler.info a new look.  Took a vey short afternoon install and get a look I like using the elegance theme.

Bottom line is I am suitably impressed and WP has been added to my toolbox.  That doesn’t mean WP will be used for everything but when it is a better fit to the project.

At this point in time I can’t really answer that question. It has evolved from a desire to satisfy the big G requirement to have a privacy statement and contact from all sites using Adsense. I felt it might be worth the effort to have a single document which could be modified easily than having to make a change on each and every site. That got me thinking it might be a good chance to dig into Wordpress so here I sit with a working generalized privacy statement which just requires a link from any site which passes the domain name to a custom template. I could have done that in under an hour with Drupal where this took an afternoon and evening but I learned something in the process. (more…)
